Places of transit are emblematic of our present time. We are living in an age of the in-between, the borderless, the transitory. The whole process of globalisation would be unthinkable without places of transit which have become part and parcel of our everyday lives. The atmosphere of railway platforms, hotel rooms, ports and airport terminals is a restless mix of variety and monotony, contact and anonymity, bustle and standstill. We enter highly complex networking spatial structures and surrender ourselves up to them. Familiar structures of space and time are disrupted and fractured in transit as we seek to overcome physical distance.

The work “in_transit #1” portrays the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai. The architecture of the airport visualises the fundamental parameters of a place of transit. Two floating poles of broadly similar structure connect up the hyper-modernist transit hub forming a kind of worm hole in which we pass through time and space. We leave our familiar complex networking order behind us to enter a subspace which physically accelerates us and releases us on the other side into the self-same order. Such is the paradox of our globalised digital existence.
